Region 16 Reports

Early Childhood Regional Needs Assessment highlights data and stories from community members across the Region and includes strengths, family- and community-identified needs, and recommendations for how to make our local Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services more accessible and equitable. 

Addendum includes additional community feedback captured as our Regional Team and Action and Family Councils shared our initial report’s findings throughout the Region.  

NEW Action Plan is a living community document that focuses on the top priorities from our Region’s initial ECEC needs assessment. Council members developed Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals for each recommendation and plans and timelines to fulfill them.

Meet Your Regional Team!

Susan Carrington

Susan (Susie) Carrington (she/her) is the Regional Council Manager for Region 16. She has worked in the Early Childhood field for 16 years. Susan has held various roles within Early Childhood settings from teacher to center director. She graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in Child Development with an emphasis in Child Life. At a very young age, Susan had a passion for education and has wanted to share her love of learning with everyone around her. She lives in the DeKalb area with her husband and three dogs. She enjoys reading, making rustic crafts, scrapbooking, and spending time with her family.

 

Malia Jones

Malia Jones (she/her) is the Family & Community Engagement Specialist for Region 16. Malia has a background in Early Childhood Education, leadership, and social entrepreneurship. She is passionate about bridging gaps in the community and advocating for younger generations. Malia believes in building avenues for children and families to thrive and succeed. She has volunteered as a Community Liaison for three years in DeKalb County and is a powerful force in the community. Malia is experienced in facilitating community events and project management.

Malia is dedicated to her leadership, creativity, and innovative mindset to generate collaboration, solution-based communication, and impactful results.

 

Elena Pizano

Elena Pizano (she/her) is the Region 16 Administrative Support. With an extensive background in health, Elena worked closely with the prenatal Kane Kares Program at the Kane County Health Department, ensuring the prenatal and postnatal health of both mom and baby. Elena also previously worked with middle schoolers in the Dean’s Office, meeting students where they are to gain trust and build confidence to help them overcome life’s challenges. Subsequently, she worked with high schoolers at the Illinois Math and Science Academy in the Student Affairs Office, and most recently in educational licensure at the Kane County Regional Office of Education. 

Elena has a degree in Human Services and is currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration. In her spare time, she coaches sixth grade volleyball and advocates for animal welfare. She is passionate about helping families and spending quality time with family and her dogs.

Susan Carrington

Susan (Susie) Carrington (ella/la) es la Gerente del Comité Regional para la Región 16. Ha trabajado en el campo de la primera infancia durante 16 años. Susan ha desempeñado diversas funciones en el ámbito de la primera infancia, desde maestra hasta ser directora de un centro. Se graduó de Northern Illinois University con una licenciatura en Desarrollo Infantil con énfasis en Vida Infantil. Desde muy joven, Susan tenía una pasión por la educación y ha querido compartir su amor por el aprendizaje con todos a su alrededor. Vive en la zona de DeKalb con su marido y sus tres perros. Le gusta leer, hacer artesanías rústicas, crear álbums de recortes, y pasar tiempo con su familia.

 

Malia Jones

Malia Jones (ella) es la Especialista en participación familiar y comunitaria de la Región 16. Malia tiene experiencia en Educación Infantil, liderazgo y emprendimiento social. Le apasiona cerrar brechas en la comunidad y defender a las generaciones más jóvenes. Malia cree en la construcción de vías para que los niños y las familias prosperen y tengan éxito. Se ha ofrecido como enlace comunitario voluntario durante tres años en el condado de DeKalb y es una fuerza poderosa en la comunidad. Malia tiene experiencia en la facilitación de eventos comunitarios y gestión de proyectos.

Malia se dedica a su liderazgo, creatividad y mentalidad innovadora para generar colaboración, comunicación basada en soluciones y resultados impactantes.

 

Elena Pizano

Elena Pizano (ella/ella/ella) es la persona de apoyo administrativo de la Región 16 de Birth to Five Illinois. Con una amplia experiencia en salud, Elena ha trabajado estrechamente con el Programa prenatal Kane Kares en el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Kane, asegurando la salud prenatal y postnatal de la madre y el bebé. Elena también trabajó estrechamente con estudiantes de secundaria en la Oficina del Decano, conociendo a los estudiantes donde están para ganar confianza y construir la confianza ayudándoles a superar los desafíos de la vida. Posteriormente, trabajó con estudiantes de secundaria en la Illinois Math and Science Academy de Asuntos Estudiantiles, y más recientemente en la obtención de licencias educativas en la Oficina Regional de Educación del Condado de Kane.

Elena es licenciada en Servicios Humanos y actualmente está cursando una licenciatura en Administración de Empresas. En su tiempo libre, es entrenadora de voleibol de 6º grado y aboga por el bienestar de los animales. Le apasiona ayudar a las familias y pasar tiempo de calidad con su familia y sus perros.
