Childbirth Affected by Stigmas – By Anonymous

A photo of adult snuggling a baby. A quote from the story is at the bottom. The Illinois map with a Region highlighted in blue is to the right.

I have had what I thought was the privilege of delivering all my children at the same local hospital. But my last experience was completely different. I was in the thick of maintaining my sobriety through the Methadone Program, and all I could think was that this “red flag” on my chart was the reason behind their inability to be kind and professional. Giving birth is such an important and impressionable time as a mom, and I was not able to enjoy the moment. That program was proof of me bettering myself for my children.

Simply sharing my experience is how I hope to change the mindset of many. Our community has these resources to help individuals, whether they’re parents or not, and there shouldn’t be a negative stigma around getting help.
