Trusting My Gut – By Stephanie
At 15 months, I brought concerns about my child’s speech and her feet turning inward to her pediatrician. I was told that her speech was not delayed and that physical therapy would not help her feet. I wasn’t comfortable with those answers, so with help from her child care provider, I made a referral to Child & Family Connections.
During the evaluation, it took less than five minutes for the evaluator to notice that my daughter was mouth breathing and drooling and suggest that she may have enlarged adenoids, something her doctor had never mentioned. The evaluation also determined that she would benefit from both speech and physical therapy.
We saw an ENT (an ear, nose, and throat specialist), who confirmed that her adenoids were very enlarged. She had them removed at 22 months old. Speech therapy helped her language skills really take off, while physical therapy helped strengthen her weak core and improve the way her feet were turning in. She also wore cables on her legs to help straighten her feet.
By age 3, she graduated from Early Intervention and no longer needed services. I’m so thankful I trusted my gut and sought out additional support instead of simply waiting it out. Sometimes, as a parent, you know when something just doesn’t feel right, and it’s okay to keep asking questions and seek a second opinion.
