In Illinois, a growing movement is helping local families navigate the complex world of early childhood education and care.
Birth to Five Illinois is a statewide initiative launched three years ago to support the development of the new Illinois Department of Early Childhood, and it is already making a positive difference in communities across the state.
One of the ways the initiative is accomplishing that goal is through family and action councils. These groups help identify the barriers families face, such as limited childcare access and transportation challenges, and work together to find real, community-driven solutions.
Region 17 covers Livingston, Logan, DeWitt, and McLean counties.
According to Regional Council Manager Melissa Breeden, awareness for this vital program is very low. The program is currently building bridges between families and vital services.
“I like to think of Birth to Five Illinois Region 17 as that bridge. We encourage families if there’s a need, come chat with us, and then we can find those partners and really walk alongside you,” said Breeden.
One of the biggest challenges families’ face is the complexity of the system itself. Accessing childcare and early education resources can be overwhelming, especially for single parents or non-native English speakers.
Families interested in shaping the future of early childhood care in Central Illinois can join the Family Council. A stipend is provided for members, and all perspectives are welcome.
