Starting Over – By Karen Jacobs
I was a Mexican woman visiting my sister and her family in Illinois, enjoying my vacation and spending time with my nieces and nephew when I met the man who would later become my husband. What began as an unexpected encounter changed the course of my life.
After we married, I moved to Kuwait, where we spent several years building a life together. Living in the Middle East was one of the most enriching experiences I have ever had. I met people from many cultures, religions, and backgrounds, which broadened my perspective and inspired me to keep learning about the world.
Like many families, we faced challenges along the way. After struggling to conceive, we received disappointing news that we might never have children. However, life surprised us with a blessing when we discovered we were expecting our first daughter. Later, our second daughter joined our family, and we were grateful to raise both girls in Kuwait.
When my husband's work contract ended, we decided to return to Illinois, where our story had first begun. Starting over in a new country brought unexpected difficulties. Raising our daughters between Mexican and American cultures meant balancing two languages, traditions, and ways of life. As a mother, I also faced practical concerns about education, work, child care, and supporting my family.
Another challenge was the language barrier. Many important appointments and procedures required communication in English, and translators were not always available. I enrolled in English classes and worked hard to improve, but I know that many immigrants face even greater obstacles due to limited resources, time, or support.
Immigration offers opportunities, but it also requires sacrifice, resilience, and adaptability. Looking back, I am grateful for every challenge because each one helped shape the person, wife, and mother I am today.
